Kilkeel is Northern Irelands major fishing port, it is situated at the mouth of the Kilkeel river which rises in the Silent Valley, the name means 'Church of the narrow place' referring to the narrow strip of land between the Mourne mountains and the coast, or it may have referred to an early church. The economy of the town is largely dependent on the fishing industry which was at its zenith in the mid seventies of the last century. Today prawns are the mainstay of the industry, with crabs in season, white fish is also sought although quota restrictions, together with the scarceness of the the fish has severely curtailed landings in recent years. There are several small manufacturing businesses producing items ranging from aircraft seats to double glazed windows and doors located in the town. The town is conveniently situated for those wishing to explore the south down area and the Mourne Mountains in particular, excellent accommodation is to be found both in the town and surrounding area.
