Groomsport.
(Harbour
of the gloomy servant)
Groomsport
is a pretty seaside town situated a few miles from Bangor. On
13th August 1689 Marshal Schomberg landed here with 10,000 thousand
men to defend the Williamite cause, these forces were joined
the next year when William III landed at Carrickfergus
in Co Antrim.
Schomberg marched his army to Belfast
crossing the river Lagan over a stone
bridge which stood on the site of the present Queens Bridge.
It is said that the passage of his heavy cannon destroyed this
bridge which had to be replaced shortly after.
On 9th Sept 1626 The Eagles Wing sailed
out of Groomsport with 140 colonists bound for America, they
were forced back by bad weather.
