Carlow was a flashpoint of the 1798 rebellion, on the morning of 23rd May about four thousand poorly armed rebel marched on the town of Carlow. They entered the town with no resistance, but they had walked into an ambush as they emerged from Tullow street they were met by a hail of musket fire, many took refuge in nearby houses but these were put to the torch.

More than five hundred were killed in this battle amd another two hundred were executed later. Across the river Barrow at Graigue four hundred and seventeen of the rebels were buried, the site became known as 'The Croppies Grave'.
