Carlow was a flashpoint
of the 1798 rebellion, on the morning of
23rd May about four thousand poorly armed rebel marched on the town
of Carlow. They entered the town with no resistance, but they had
walked into an ambush as they emerged from Tullow street they were
met by a hail of musket fire, many took refuge in nearby houses
but these were put to the torch.
More than five hundred were killed in this
battle amd another two hundred were executed later. Across the river
Barrow at Graigue four hundred and seventeen of the rebels were
buried, the site became known as 'The Croppies Grave'.
