This
battle was a major rebel victory against English rule during the
Confederate wars of 1641-53. In 1641 a Catholic rebellion broke
out seeking religious freedom.
From 1642 the northern rebels
were led by Eoghan Rua ONeill
(Owen Roe ONeill) ONeill was an experienced soldier and had served
thirty years in Spain, he was the nephew of Hugh ONeill who left
Ireland with The Flight
of the Earls.
At Benburb, near Moy in County
Tyrone, on 5th June 1646, he led the rebels to victory over General
Robert Monroe a Scottish ally of England.
