The Battle of Maynooth.

1535.

Maynooth was one of the strongholds of the Earls of Kildare. It was besieged during the rebellion of Silken Thomas 'Lord Thomas Fitzgerald' which began in 1534 supporting his father who had been recalled to London. Thomas was defeated at Maynooth by Lord Leonard Grey, martial of the English army, under the lord deputy William Skeffington.

Survivors of the battle were executed an event which came to be known as 'The Pardon of Maynooth'. Silken Thomas escaped but was captured in 1537 and executed.
