The development of the farm tractor and particularly the three point linkage system where an implement can be raised or lowered using hydraulic power, owes much to Harry Ferguson a farmers son form County Down,

Fordson tractor at Mill Farm Tollymore near Newcastle County Down, this is one of the early petrol Fordson's, this one is fitted with iron wheels some times called spade lugs.

It is driven by Margaret Holmes while her father George Holmes makes adjustments to the trailed plough.

These early tractors were simply draught vehicles, although they could be fitted with a flat pulley to drive a thresher or other stationary implement.
