Land Roller .

The illustration below shows a land roller, this is used to consolidate the soil and to push any stones that may be above the surface down level with the surface, so that they wont damage the blades of the reaper.

The drums are made from cast iron, sometimes if the farmer wanted to add some weight to the roller he would place large stones on top of the roller frame.

Pierce's foundry in Wexford made many of the cast iron rollers on Irish farms.

Rollers today are made from steel they are usually sealed and have a plug fitted enabling the roller to be filled with water.

Land rollers were sometimes made from stone in the Mourne area of County Down rollers made from granite can occasionally be found.
