Worms play an important part in the eco system of the country, they are natures recyclers, converting dead organic material into a nutrient rich compost. Each worm can process twice its body weight in 48 hours, they can do this to anything that once lived, paper, food scraps cooked and raw, grass cuttings and other garden waste. Today we produce ever increasing quantities of household waste, it is generally accepted that 50% of domestic rubbish that at the moment goes to landfill, which incidentally produces methane gas, one of the more potent of the greenhouse gases, this waste could be recycled by worms, treating the waste in this way would not only substantially reduce methane output but produce valuable soil enriching compost. Everyone with perhaps the exception of the inner city dweller could have a worm farm, you don't need rolling acres in the country, just a container about the size of a rubbish bin this can be a state of the art wormery designed for the job, or a wooden or metal container, although wood is preferable from an insulation point of view. In the not too distant future councils will unsubtly begin to charge householders for the amount of waste they produce, apparently in County Antrim bins are having a chip fitted and the lorries fitted with weighing equipment In the jump menu at the top of this page you will find links to a few worm farms in Ireland, they will be able to supply you with all you need to set up your own worm farm at home. |
