The
area around Lough Rynn has been occupied for thousands of years, there
is a Bronze Age burial tomb near the site of a ruined castle, once the
stronghold of the Reynolds clan, who were dispossessed of it in 1622 when
it was granted to the Crofton family, the property remained in their hands
until 1750 when it was acquired? by The Earls of Leitrim.
In 1832 a house was built by Nathaniel Clements second Earl, when his
son William Sydney Clements, succeeded as Third Earl of Leitrim, the house
became the administrative centre of a vast estate covering an area of
90,000 acres (36,422 Hectares) in four counties.
