In Gaelic times Seaforde was called Naghan, the area was owned by the McCartan clan, who were forced to part with one third of their possessions in 1605 by Lord Edward Cromwell, who's career in Ireland began in May 1599 as "Colonel of Foot" in Dundalk County Louth in the army of Elixabeth I, Cromwell returned to England where he was implicated in the attemped coup by The Earl of Essex against Elizabeth, after spending some time in The Tower of London he was eventually released, but lost most of his English land.

After Cromwell's death the estate was bought by the Forde family of Ballyfad, Coolgreaney, County Wexford for £8,000
