The Village of Maghera.

Rath-murbhuilg, the rath at the sea inlet

Just outside the nearby village is Maghera (Machaire) Church which dates from early Christian times, it is thought the site was previously a Druidic college. It was founded by St Domangard, the son of Echu last pagan king of the region. The site is said to have been given to the church by the McCartan family, who endowed many churches in the barony of Kinlearty which they controlled. The McCartan's were forced to part with a third of their land to Lord Edward Cromwell in 1605 and subsequently lost it all in the 1641 rebellion.

The highest mountain in the nearby Mourne's is named Slieve Donard. On this site can be seen the remains of an early church and the stump of a round tower part of the fallen tower lies on the ground nearby still intact, testament to strength of the mortar used by the monks over a thousand years ago, it was blown down during a storm in 1710.

A brooch dated to the 13th century, with the Knights Templar insignia, was discovered on this site in 1846.
