(Leap of the dog)
The town of Limavady takes its name
(which means "dog leap") from an ancient legend that a dog leapt
across a nearby gorge with a message to save the people. It is situated
on the river Roe, and is a busy residential, market, and trading centre
as well as the administrative headquarters of the district.
Limavady has connections wit many famous people
Thackery lived for a time in Ballyclose Street and probably wrote the
poem 'Sweet Peg of Limavady' there. William Masse (1856-1925) Prime Minister
of New Zealand was a native of the town. he well known tune 'Danny Boy'
or 'The Londonderry Air, was first noted down there by a Miss Jane Ross,
who got it from a traveling fiddler.

The town was the first in
the country to be lit by electricity. The generating power house
(1896) is open to the public.
