Sean MacBride.

 

(1904-88)

Sean MacBride was the son of Maude Gonne and Major John MacBride, he inherited his mothers political awareness, and fought in the war of Independence opposing the treaty. He was imprisoned by the Free State government 1923-4. He was an IRA chief of staff from 1936-38, by 1939 he adopted the constitutional path, in 1946 he founded Clann na Poblachta.

Appointed minister of home affairs in the coalition government of 1948-51, he quickly rose to be accepted internationally, he was a founder member of Amnesty International, and co-author of the UN Declaration of Human Rights.
