(1616-1680)
Captain Blood fame as
a conspirator is based on his attempt to steal the Crown Jewels
from the Tower of London in1671. In Ireland Blood was already as
infamous as an intriguer, when in, 1663 a plot was uncovered known
as Bloods Plot, Blood and some other disaffected Protestants sought
to occupy Dublin Castle unsuccessfully.
After the Stuart's had
reclaimed the throne of England, The Act of Settlement of 1662 restored
the lands confiscated, under Cromwell to their ancestral owner's
leaving the Protector's former beneficiaries seething.
Implementation of the Act was
overseen by the Earl of Ormond, whom Blood tried to murder in 1670,
as he was pardoned by the government for all his crimes leads, to
the strong belief that he was in fact a government spy. |
