The Mole. To the best of my knoewledge there are no moles in Ireland. The mole spends most of its life umderground, it is almost totally blind, it's diet consists mostly of earthworms and snails. It is considered a pest by gardners and farmers, the extensive tunnels it excevates can be a danger to livestock, and ruin lawn's. Although there are no moles in Ireland, they are remembered in a toast sometimes drunk in republician circles. 'To the little gentleman in black velvet.' More information. |

The mink is a member of the weasel family native to North America and Canada those found in Ireland are descended from animals that have escaped or been released from Irish fir farms. They are considered by most wildlife experts as a pest because of, among others, its predation on ground-nesting bird species and losses of poultry, pheasant poults and farmed fish. If you know of mink in your area there is currently a survey underway in which you can participate, visit this page for more information. |
