The Franciscan Order.

The order was founded in 1210 by St. Francis of Assisi, twenty years later in 1230 the order had established itself in Ireland. It was an order of mendicant friars, depending on the charity of others, they had a very strong commitment to the welfare of the poor.

Although they too slipped into the pit of institutional corruption, at times becoming embroiled in internal faction fighting along ethnic lines.

In the mid 1500's they stood with the Gaelic peasantry against the Tudor colonization, and worked with them underground throughout much of the seventeenth century. After this period they declined significantly, only recovering in the twentieth century.
