Whatever activity you intend to engage in always ensure you have the correct equipment with you, these include clothing, safety equipment, a mobile phone, and refreshment. If you intend hill walking, take a map and compass, and remember in the mountains the weather can change at an alarming speed. The secret is to be prepared.

If you book with an activity provider they should provide you with all the necessary safety equipment, they will be aware of any local dangers, listen and adhere to their advice. When engaged in water sports of any kind, always wear a life jacket.

  • Before starting a new activity it may be wise to check with your doctor.
  • Before you set out check the weather forecast, you will find weather forecasts covering all of Ireland on our news and weather page.
  • Ensure all equipment is in good condition and regularly serviced.
  • When booking activities for children , ask for a copy of their child protection policy.
  • If you are setting out alone tell someone your destination and the time you expect to return.
  • Listen to what your instructor has to say, and use all the safety equipment provided.

  • Be aware of where you are allowed to go.
  • Respect the people who live and work in the country.
  • Keep streams and rivers clean, avoid performing bodily functions near them, you may be drinking the water when you go home.
  • Don't interfere with livestock or crops, keep your dog under control especially near sheep at lambing time (Spring early Summer)
  • Be especially careful on narrow country roads.
  • Keep to paths when crossing farmland.
  • Use gates and styles where provided, avoid climbing over wall.
  • Keep away from nesting birds, respect all wildlife plants and trees.
  • Take your litter home, be especially careful when lighting fires, make sure it is properly extinguished before you leave.
  • And remember some parks Esc do not permit fires.
