The museum is housed in a restored late sixteenth century tower house built by Sir Henry Wallop on the site of a thirteenth century Prendergast castle. The poet Edmund Spencer leased the building for a time.

The ground floor has displays of Neolithic axe heads and numerous medieval and later weapons, also a nineteenth century jaunting car, and kitchen and dairy equipment from the same period. On the first floor are memorabilia of the Irish war of independence and civil war (1916-22), as well as cannon and musket balls found nearby at the site of the battle of Vinegar Hill (1798) also cross slabs and church vestments. The top floor displays farm tools, pottery, lace, hardware, ship models and figureheads.
