The town of Fintona lies about midway between the Sperrin Mountains in County Tyrone and Lough Erne in County Fermanagh, there is much evidence around Fintona and in Tyrone of early human habitation with stone circles, standing stones and burial sites, one such is The Beagmore Stone Circles.

In Gaelic times the area around Fintona was controlled by the O'Neill's who built a castle at Fintona in the 15th century, during the plantation the English Eccles family were granted the land 1668.

Fintona has the distinction of being the last town in Ireland and the UK to operate a horse drawn tram, the tram took passengers from the Fintona railway station which opened on 5 June 1853, to the Fintona Junction station one mile away on the main Omagh to Enniskillen railway. The tram service became history on 30 September 1957 when the Omagh to Enniskillen line closed, the tram is preserved in The Ulster Folk and Transport Museum at Cultra County Down.

In the vicinity of Fintona lie the Murley Mountain rising to a height of 312 meters (1024 feet) one of the largest wind farms in Ireland is located here the Lendrums Bridge wind farm has 20 turbines with another 10 planned for nearby Hunter's Hill.

The holiday maker is well catered for in Tyrone with many excellent hotels, guest houses and self catering establishments.
