The
Rock of Cashel. |
||||
The Rock was built sometime between 1127 and 1134 on a hilltop on the site of Cormac's Chapel by Cormac McCarty, King of Munster. It stands on what was originally the fort of the kings of Munster. The Rock was finally granted to the Church in 1101 by the King Murtagh O'Brien. The site consists of a spectacular group of Medieval buildings set on an outcrop of limestone, these including the 12th century round tower, High Cross and Romanesque Chapel, 13th century Gothic cathedral, 15th century Castle and the restored Hall of the Vicars Choral.
