With a backdrop of the Slieve Bloom Mountains this tiny village which was laid out in the 18th century is worth a visit

Nearby is castle Bernard built in Tudor Revival style in the early 19th century. Inside the Church of Ireland Church can be seen an early Christian grave slab. Kinnity Castle caters for weddings.

Banagher.
 

Banagher is situated on the east bank of the river Shannon, this picturesque town has many associations with famous people. Oscar Wilde's father Sir William Wilde attended the Cuba House school.

The Rev Arthur Bell Nicholls who was married to Charlotte Bronte (the authoress of Wuthering Heights) was rector in the local church, they spent their honeymoon there, after she died in England, he spent the rest of his life at the rectory until his own death in 1906. In 1841 Anthony Trollop who a Post Office surveyor based here, he commenced writing his first published book whilst living in the town.

There was an early monastic site near the town nothing of it now remains, except a ruined church and graveyard of much later date.

Dangean.

It may not appear so today but this little town once the seat of the O'Connors, chiefs of Offaly was once the county town of Offaly. Offaly was one of the first counties to be planted by English settlers in the 1550's During the reign of Tudor. In honour of her husband Philip II if Spain Offaly was called King's County and Dangean Philipstown. Despite the colonization it eventually lost its place as county town to Tullamore mainly because of its remoteness.
