The inhabitants of the
village of Cong nestling on the shores of Lough Corrib
must have been amazed, when in 1951 it was invaded by an American
film crew to make what was to turn out to be John Ford's greatest
film 'The Quiet Man' starring John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara (who was
a native to Ireland and spoke Irish) and Barry Fitzgerald. Located
by the river at Circular Road, Cong, between actual locations used
for the filming, the ground floor of the cottage is an exact replica
of 'The White o Mornin' Cottage featured in the film.
It must have been something of a homecoming
for Ford also as he was born Sean O’Feeney in 1894, in Spiddal,
County Galway.
The town of Cong is situated on an island
in the middle of the River Cong, the name is derived from the Irish
cunga for isthmus or 'narrows' which separates Lough Mask and Lough
Corrib.
The
museum is a must if you would like to see a typical early twentieth
century Irish cottage.
If you happen to be a fishing
enthusiast the trout fishing in the area is reckoned to be the
best in Europe.
