The
village and port of Greenore is situated on the southern shore
of Carlingford Lough in County Louth. After the plantation the area was
held by the Spencer family ancestors of Lady Diana Spencer, Edmund Spencer
was granted large tracts of land in Ireland during the Elizabethan
Plantation. The Spencer's developed the port which is now administered
by the Dublin Port Authority, the port currently handles approximately
one million tons of mixed cargoes annually. Recently a hotel which stood
within the port area was demolished, this building was the venue for the
wedding reception for famous TV personality of the 50's and 60's Eamon
Andrews.
In the past Greenore was used for
the export of cattle
and a passenger service ran to Hollyhead in Wales. It was from here on
3rd November 1916 a passenger steamer The Connemara left bound for Hollyhead,
while negotiating the channel close to the Haulboline
Lighthouse she was struck amidships by a collier the Retriever inward
bound for Newry, 94 persons perished on that bleak winters night.
I recently had the pleasure of working
in and around Greenore, and can honestly say that the people of the area
are the friendliest and most accommodating you could wish to meet.
