The town takes its name from the Edgeworth family, Edgeworthstown House was built by Richard Lovell Edgeworth (1744-1817), author and inventor and father of the novelist Maria Edgeworth (1767-1849).

Three miles to the north is Firmount it was once owned by Essex Edgeworth rector of Edgeworthstown, he was the father of Abbé Edgeworth de Firmont who attended Louis XVI at his execution.

For the past ten years (2006) Edgeworthtown has hosted a literary - music festival in the spring of the year, this event is attended by artists from across the musical, literary and geographic spectrum of Ireland and beyond.
