Narrow Gauge Station. The narrow gauge railway line that once connected the towns of Drumshanbo, Mohill and Ballinamore is chronicled in the former station at Dromod. Half a mile of the old line has been restored and you can experience the sights, sounds and smells of the bygone age of steam, and take a ride on board a train running the length of the restored track. The line was closed, despite a storm of local protest in 1959. There were a surprising number of narrow gauge railways in rural Ireland in the early years of the last century, there was hardly a town in Ireland that was more than ten miles from a station, at its peak in the 1920 3,500 miles of track wended it way through the countryside. The gauge universally adopted for the small track was 3 Ft (.91 M) while the main lines eventually adopted 5 ft 3 inches (1.602 M) The age of steam is not forgotten in Ireland, there are many heritage sites displaying memorabilia from the golden age of steam and are dedicated to preserving a mode of transport that although still with us, albeit on a much curtailed scale, was perhaps the major carrier of people and freight for over a century. Some of the main lines offer steam excursions occasionally.
