Towns in County Laois.

Ballyadams..

(Baile Adam)
(Townland of Adam.)

This town grew up around the site of a Norman castle built by a member of the O'More family in the 15th century. Enough is left of the building to give an idea of its impressive scale, it has five stories connected by a spiral staircase, and two towers. Unusually, the iron-studded oak doorway has survived.

The history of Ballyadams includes many battles. It was taken in 1548 by the Earl of Desmond's army who evicted the O'More's when they burnt the town and monastery of Athy. The O'More's never regained possession and the castle. It was taken over in 1551 by Welshman John Bowen, known as 'Shane-a-feeka' or John of the Pike, a man who was renowned for his cruelty.
