According
to tradition when Muckross Abbey was first founded it was known
as "Carraig-an-chiuil" the Rock of Music, Mor (Donnell)
MacCarthy, son of Tadhg, is reputed to have had a dream in which
he built a Fransiscian monastery at a place called Carraig-an-chiuil.
He dispatched some of his servants
to look for such a place, one of them returned saying that he had
heard music coming from a rock at Irrelagh in Killarney. MacCarthy
immediately began building the moneatary.
