Leixlip is situated ten miles from Dublin on the Maynooth road, at the confluence of the rivers Liffy and Rye, it takes its name from the Norse and means 'Salmon Leap' The drop in the river at the town is harnessed to generate electric.

Leixlip castle is an early eighteenth century house incorporating two towers from a medieval castle.

An unusual building is located about a mils south west of the town, it is a five storey bottle shaped barn, with external stairs, built in 1743 by Mrs Connolly of Castletown.
