(Strand of Li)

Tralee is the county town of Kerry and is situated on the River Lee (or Li) near Tralee Bay to which it is linked by canal. It is a market for the produce of this largely agricultural region and is also the center for some light industry that includes engineering and textile manufacture. Tralee grew up as a fortified settlement around the 13th century Desmond castle seat of the earls of Desmond, no trace of the castle exists today. The town and castle were destroyed by Cromwell's troops in the mid 1600's.

In Day Place on the site of a 13th century friary stands the Dominician churvh built in 1861 and designed by Edward Pugin, the church has some fine stained glass. Nearby in Castle street St Johns church built in 1860 is reputed to have the tallest spire in Ireland rising to 61 Metres (200 ft)

Tourism is important in the town which is an ideal base for those wishing to explore the Dingle Peninsula. The town is one terminus of the steam railway from Tralee to Blennerville. Tralee is also the headquarters of the National Folk Theater of Ireland (Siamsa Tíre).
