The town of Abbeydorney probably grew up around a Cistercian Abbey founded just north of the town in 1154. Some time after the famine the father of the heavyweight boxer J L Sullivan emigrated to America from the town. Near the town at Leith there is a small wind farm with two turbines with a combined output of about 20 MW. The railway system reached the town in 1880 and continued until passenger services were withdrawn in 1963, after which the line was used for freight only until 1978 when the line was closed completely. |
