Ballymalis Castle.
 

(Townland of Malis.)

Ballymalis castle stands on the banks of the river Laune, it is the well preserved remains of a four-storied fifteenth or sixteenth century tower house, it has small turrets projecting from diagonally opposed corners.

Ross Castle.
 


(Wood, copse.)

Situated on Lough Leane with magnificent views of the lake and surrounding mountains. Ross castle was built by O'Donoghue Ross, it is a tower house and stands inside a ruined Bawn two of the corner towers survive. The lower annex was added in the eighteenth century. In 1641 the castle was threatened by amphibious attack by Cromwell's soldiers under General Ludlow and surrendered. Later the castle saw action during the Williamite wars.

The castle has been renovated by the board of works, and now contains an interpretation centre, it is open to the public during the summer season. Waterbus tours of the lake are available close to the castle.

Recently (Feb 2006) the castle was the subject of a popular painting programme presented on RTE by David Willis.

 

 

 

Staigue Fort.
 

(Strip of land.)

This ring fort possibly dated from the stone age, it is one of the most impressive and well preserved ring fort or cashel from that period. The dry stone walls are 4 meters (13 ft ) thick at the base and rise to a height of 5.5 Meters (18 ft)

Steps on the inside face of the wall give access to the ramparts. The entrance is on the south side, Surrounding the fort is a ditch and earthen bank, which was obviously part of the defenses.
