This Dominican Friary was founded in 1241 by Meiler de Birmingham. The north wall of the choir is all that remains of the original building. The choir and the north arcade were extended about 1324. The church was rebuilt in the fifteenth century when a north wing was added. Renovations were carried out in the seventeenth century. Interesting snippet about the de Birmingham's.

This abbey was allegedly founded by St. Brendan the Navigator and it was here he was inspired to plan his voyage of discovery into the Atlantic, some scholars think he may have voyaged as far as the coast of Newfoundland.
