Skerries

(Rocky isalnds. Norse)

Skerries lies on the coast of north County Dublin on the east coast of Ireland about 25 Km from Dublin city centre. The town once had a thriving commercial fishing industry with most of the boats fishing the Irish sea for prawns, the fleet is now reduced to a few boats. The harbour has long been a focal point of the town, St Patrick is said to have landed nearby, later the Vikings arrived and settled in the area, some Norse names survive to this day. Before the advent of steam a considerable amount of trade passed through the port

The town has much to offer the tourist or day tripper, the Ardgillen estate once owned by the Baxter family is open to the public, there is a fine 18 hole championship golf course and Skerries Mills offer the opportunity to see a water mill and two windmills on the same site
