This charming
miniature railway is the result of fourteen years hard work by a
group of committed volunteers, the track extends to about 1500 Metres
(1,641 Yards) the trains run on a track with a gauge of 19 Cm (7.25
inches). The society open the railway to the public on about fourty
days a year, visit their web
site for details.
Having visited Drumawhey Miniature Railway
in April 2010 we can thoroughly recommend this very atmospheric
attraction, the smell of coal combined with plumes of steam really
added historical ambience. Of the different engines, were were lucky
enough to catch the miniature steam train called Marilyn, which
was driven by the man who built it. The track wound around over
a little stream and then over a railway bridge with another track
below, through tunnels, past gnomes building there own little railway
into the the sidings.
Effort was made capture the imagination
of the children by the liberal addition of little animal such Peter Rabbit
sitting beside the track,or families of squirrel or kingfishers catching
fish.We could have spent all day going round the tracks pointing out the
myriad things to see, a great day out. All praise to the dedicated people
who run it as a labour of love.
The railway is located at Four
Road Ends, where the Bangor to Carrowdore Road meets the B172 Newtownards
to Milllisle Road. If you would like to join the society and help with
the day to day running and maintenance, they are currently looking for
new members.
