Dunree Fort.

Dunree Fort.

The fort sited on the crown of Dunree Head emphasizes the strategic importance of Lough Swilly. Faced with the threat of invasion by Napoleon in 1800 heavy guns were mounted at the fort to control access to the Lough. Martello towers were added during the next decade.

At the beginning of World War I the British fleet assembled of Dunree Head. For the duration of the war the guns protected the ships that gathered there for the Atlantic run. In 1917 the Americans established a base there. The British continued to use the base after the war, they handed it back to Ireland in 1938. It is now a museum dealing with coastal weaponry from the mid 19th century.. (The museum is open from June to September.)

In 2005 a commemoration service was held at the fort to remember the many servicemen, and people from the area who died in both world wars, this ceremony was attended by all shades of political opinion in Ireland north and south.
