Buncrana.

Buncrana stands on the eastern shore of the peninsula of Inishowen, the name means 'foot of the river of the trees?'. The river Crana flows into Lough Swilly by Buncrana. Close to the six arched bridge over the Crana is the 15th century square keep of the castle of the O'Doherty's It was burnt by the English in 1602 at a time when local chief Hugh Boy O'Doherty was expecting an armada from Spain.

Near by is Buncrana Castle which was the stronghold of the O'Doherty's it was rebuilt by Hugh O'Doherty in 1605. The castle was burnt by the English on the occasion of the rebellion of Sir Cahir O'Doherty (1608) after which it was granted to Sir Arthur Chichester, who leased it to Henry Vaughan, the Vaughn family lived in it until 1718 when Sir Henry Vaughn built a house nearby, using materials salvaged from the castle bawn.

It was in this castle that Wolf Tone (1763-1798) was initially imprisoned after his capture in 1798.
