Virginia County Cavan.

Virginia.

Set on the shores of Lough Ramor, Virginia offers wide sporting and recreational facilities, especially fishing both coarse and game. With its profusion of rivers and lakes, the county is sometimes described as the angling capital of Ireland. The town has excellent facilities including accommodation to suit all. Both the rivers Shannon and Erne have their sources.

One and a half miles NE of the town is the site of Cuilcagh House, home of the Rev Thomas Sheridan (1687-1738) friend of Johanathan swift and author of a charming translation of Persius. He was father of Thomas Sherridan (1719-88) and grandfather of Richard Brinsley Sheridan (1751-1816)

Jonathan Swift wrote a large part of Gulliver's Travels whilst staying with the Sheridan family, at Cuilcagh House.

Read about Virginia from Samuel Lewis' Topographical Directory of Ireland 1837.
