In the early 1970's Rathvilly won Irelands tidiest town award no less than three times, today the town is as well kept as ever, so perhaps we'll see them winning again.

In the town centre is a monument to local boy Kevin Barry a medical student who was executed in Mountjoy jail for his part in the 1916 uprising.

Rathvilly was the home Crimthan King of Leinster. He was notorious for his percussion of Christians, until he was converted and baptized by Saint Patrick.

 

Tullow.

In the market square of Tullow is a statue of Father John Murphy, a leader of the rebellion of 1798, the statue marks the spot where he was hanged for his part in the uprising. His vestments are to be seen in Tullow museum.

For anyone wishing to explore the northern part of County Carlow, Tullow would make an excellent base, its friendly inhabitants only to willing to assist he stranger.

Borris.

The town of Borris with its largely Georgian architecture which can be credited to Arthur MacMurrough Kavanagh who lived in Borris House, the impressive gatehouse to the Kavanagh estate which is not open to the public can be seen on the main street.

Borris would be an excellant base from which to explore the nearby Blachstairs Mountains, the town is well provided with accomodation to suit all tastes and budgets.
