King Fergus of Scotland drowned near Carrickfergus on his way to the healing well in the rock.
1178
John de Courcy began the construction of the castle.
1204
John de Courcy driven out of Ulster by Hugh de Lacy.
1210
King John took the castle from Hugh de Lacy by siege.
1224
Hugh de Lacy attacked Carrickfergus.
1227
Hugh de Lacy created Earl of Ulster
1264
Walter de Burgh created Earl of Ulster
1274
Richard de Burgh created Earl of Ulster
1315 25th May
Edward Bruce lands with 6,000 troops at Larne and lays siege to the castle.
Bruce was a son in law of Richard de Burgh.
1316 24th June
During a parley the castle defenders seized 30 Scots.
The Laud annals reports that 8 of these were killed and eaten.
1316 September
The castle surrenders.

William de Burgh created Earl of Ulster
1602
Con O'Neill arrested by Hugh Montgoery and imprisoned in the castle.
He escapes.
1642-43
Randall MacDonnell imprisoned. He escapes twice.

Eight women tried for witchcraft in Carrickfergus.
1760
French troops under Commodore Thurot land in Carrick and attack the castle.
French soldiers are held in the castle.
1798
Prisoners of the 1798 rebellion are held in the castle
